Before Hurricane Ike
(US Fish and Wildlife Service)

After Ike – The storm surge caused saltwater to sweep over the Reserve, thereby destroying the natural freshwater environemnt (e.g. killing the freshwater crestacians that a lot of the birds feed on). It will take years, if not decades, to reapir the damage.
